The dream began in Amsterdam, Holland, in 1828, a legacy of over 190 years, when Coenraad VAN HOUTEN pioneered a process to manufacture cocoa. The result was a tastier and more soluble cocoa powder which spurred the growth of the hot chocolate drink industry.
Very soon Van Houten cocoa powder conquered the hearts of thousands of chocolate lovers.
Cocoa mass was treated with alkaline salts to remove the bitter taste and make cocoa solids more water-soluble; the resulting product is called “Dutch process” chocolate. Today, this process is known as “Dutching”. The final product, Dutch chocolate, has a dark colour and a mild taste.
Their innovative Dutching process created the lovely, full-bodied, chocolatey taste of cocoa we still enjoy today.
Since 2018 All Van Houten drinks are UTZ certified and are made with 100% sustainable cocoa.

The rich, dark cocoa is also perfect for baking!
- Put 1 teaspoon (5ml) of Van Houten Cocoa in a mug
- Add 1 teaspoon (5ml) of sugar if desired in the mug
- Warm up 100ml of milk up to 70°C
- Pour warm milk in the mug with cocoa and sugar
- Stir very well until dissolved
For a larger mug, just double the cocoa!
