Since I first heard about this blend about 40 years ago from the restaurateur Terence Conran – who mentions it several times as his favourite – this has been my absolute go-to morning coffee.
I carry packets of it with me when I travel.
It smells like Juliette Greco breakfasting from an octagonal green cup, alongside a freshly baked croissant, on a balcony of the hotel ”La Louisianne" in St Germain-des-Près, in the days when she lived there alongside Miles Davis, Albert Camus & Boris Vian.
(Gitanes cigarettes are no longer compulsory; they’re now only an optional extra.)
I make it in an Aeropress, ground at no. 4.
(My other Algerian favourites are their Yemeni for Turkish coffee, and their Monsoon Malabar, which is stunningly delicious.)
