Panforte is a typical sweet from Siena with ancient origins. Originally created by the nuns in a medieval convent in honour of a visiting Pope, this Italian sweet has since been a staple in its tradition. The first written record of this sweet dates back to the year 1000 and it used to be a delicacy only amongst noblemen, the rich and the clergy. It is typically enjoyed over the festive season and consists of a mixture of flour, sugar, honey, various nuts, spices and candied fruits.
This version of Panforte is hand made in the hills of Tuscany. The Masoni's panforte is a lovely twist to the traditional Italian recipe, using figs & walnuts as a delicious base.
Usually enjoyed after dinner with a sweet wine or coffee but also delicious paired with cheese!
