Maragogype is an arabica bean, grown in Guatemala, also referred to as “Elephant Bean” due to its large size. Grown high up, and wet-processed, the coffee is mellow and rich but with fine acidity and notes of tropical fruit and fresh earth. Roasted as a full roast, slightly darker than a medium, the oils are just breaking through. Perfectly brewed in a cafetiere or filter, or as a punchy espresso.
The name comes from the town of Maragogipe which is near Bahia, Brazil where these exceptionally large beans were first found.
Maragogype is now found in most producing countries, but Guatemalan is considered of superior quality and is said to be smoother and richer than the standard arabica with an acidity admired by connoisseurs.
