Description

A high roast coffee with a deep flavour, a smooth body and light acidity. With notes of malt, earth and cocoa.

The colour, shape, and size of these beans from India, as well as their aroma and taste, are the result of special post-harvest processing. Historically, coffee was shipped to Europe in wooden sailing vessels that took four to six months to sail around the Cape of Good Hope and up to their destinations. Stored below the water line and kept in an atmosphere made humid by seawater seeping through the wood, the beans underwent a transformation on their long journey to market. The bright-green beans would arrive pale gold, doubled in size and with an entirely new cup profile.

This "monsooning" process was later systematically replicated in India, with the goal of providing European customers with the cup profile they'd first become accustomed to from India and continued to demand.

The monsooning process consists of exposing natural coffee beans, in 4 to 6 inch-thick piles, to moisture-laden monsoon winds in a well-ventilated brick or concrete-floored warehouse. This process is carried out on the West Coast of India, making use of the winds from the Arabian Sea during the Southwest Monsoon months of June through September.

To equalize moisture absorption, the beans are raked frequently. During this 12- to 16-week process, the beans absorb moisture in stages, swelling to nearly twice their original size and developing colours ranging from pale gold to light brown. After several weeks, the coffee is re-bulked, graded again, bagged and moved to a drier region for longer-term storage.

Beans: Arabica

Process: Washed/Monsooned

Best Coffee Store in the UK

I’ve been ordering coffee from Algerian Coffee Stores online now for around 10 years, and I can honestly say that the customer service and coffee is second to none…… They will even advise and grind your coffee depending on the make of your machine (if you have an electric espresso that is - mines DeLonghi, not sure of the model)!!

Monsoon Malabar ground to No. 4.5 is a favourite.

Best place to buy coffee in the whole of the UK hands down.

most excellent coffee

The Monsoon Malabar which the Algerian supplies is simply the best I have ever tasted, far better than Twining's (in Fleet Street) or Coffee Direct's. I suspect that the roasting makes the difference. In any case the result from the Algerian is superb.

Indian Monsoon Malabar- worth the wait!

So I ordered this and it took a week to get to me. On the website it said it would be two days and I deliberately bought an extra bag because the delivery charge would have been quite a lot otherwise. So waiting a week wasn't great. However, the coffee is an absolute delight, which is why I have no hesitation giving it five stars. When I opened the bag I couldn't believe the beautiful sight and smell that greeted me. Dark and oily and beautifully roasted. I ground my beans, and popped my mekka pot on the stove. It was one of the best coffees I have tasted. Slightly bitter, flavours of nuts and most significantly tobacco nuances giving an earthy depth with slight chocolate hints too. Wow, it is an amazing flavour that comes from this quality bean. I love the back story of this coffee too.
